Hydross the Unstable in Serpentshrine Cavern in Coilfang Reservoir. What are Hydross’s special abilities? Who cares. What are the key pertinent strategies for defeating Hydross? Who cares. I do. That “I do” may be a little misleading. “I do” in the sense that these answers are important not for defeating Hydross and collecting loot but for answering the burning questions — what sex is Hydross the Unstable and which pronouns (he, she, him, her, it, etc.) are appropriate for use for referring to him/her/it. If you care only about boss strategies and loot drops, congratulations for the kill and please do not read further.

My apologies ahead of time to the female sex for this paragraph. Hydross the Unstable starts off in water form where he/she/it is immune to frost attacks and inflicts frost damage. This is most notably a female attack form; cold, emotionless stabs straight to the gamers’ hearts can only be classified as female. In fact, where have you seen allusions to Ice King or King of Winter? Answer: nowhere. It is decidedly always the Ice Queen or something akin to it. (Example: see Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis or old school television series A Different World.)

My apologies ahead of time to the male sex for this paragraph. Hydross the Unstable can then go into nature form where he/she/it is immune to nature attacks (haha Baka) and inflicts nature damage. He/she/it also uses abilities like Vile Sludge. This is most decidedly a male attack form. Don’t believe me? Just visit any apartment or house inhabited by a guy or a group of guys, and you’ll easily witness the ubiquitousness and power of this vile sludge. This attack power is possessed by any guy of any age.

So, sometimes Hydross the Unstable is female and sometimes male. And once again, my ruminations have resolved nothing. Or haven’t they? Isn’t there some word that means exhibiting traits of both female and male? Why yes there is! This article is brought to you by the letter H, for hermaphrodite.

Grats to Renaissance for defeating Hydross the Unstable Hermaphrodite. Don’t worry, Blizzard. I have not trademarked that phrase; you are welcome to patch the game and change the full name of Hydross to that. No charge. . .this time.
